Why is one of the major aims of Zen Daoyin to
rebalance the autonomic nerve system?
We have two autonomic nervous systems: the sympathetic and
the vagus nerve system, as a Yin/Ying harmony system. When
the body is under physical or emotional stress, the sympathetic
nervous system is dominant, which can lead to higher stress,
anxiety or depression, immune dysfunction and inflammation,
elevated blood pressure and sugar, etc. On the other hand, the
vagus nerve will bring the opposite effect as the sympathetic
nerve does. Many modern health problems may be related to
sympathetic nervous system dominance. Our Zen Daoyin is
designed to improve this Yin and Yang disharmony.

Why is Zen Daoyin based on the abdominal/
diaphragm breath?
A deep abdominal breath stretches the diaphragm, which contains
the vital vagus nerve distribution in the body. By training
ourselves to breathe correctly, we can build up a healthier stress
response. Use your mind to visualize your diaphragm expanding
downward towards “Dan Tian,” a point located under the navel,
which is a key concept in Qigong practice. Amazingly, deep
diaphragm breathing can increase the body's oxygen capacity up
to 40 percent.
